So Hillary Clinton is culpable in the death of Eight Belles because she placed a bet? And I'm sure that I am culpable for the dictatorial regime in Burma because I own a Burmese ruby! Horses are born to run. Especially racing thoroughbreds. And when they are done running, those that win are put to stud or brood. And those that don't win, if they have ethical owners, have a restful retirement. I am for the ethical treatment of animals also. However, PETA uses hyper-emotionalized propaganda that in a lot of cases has nothing at all to do with reality. My favorite ([/sarcasm]) add of theirs was the anti-leashing add about dogs. (oh, it's cruel to leash the dog, restricts it's freedom...) Oh yeah? Well how much freedom will the dog have when it's run over by the car it tried to chase, because you didn't put the poor creature on a leash?? They are not about protecting animals. They are about feeling better and making life all sunbeams and rainbows. Life is nasty, cruel, disgusting, and predatory. If you are not willing to accept that, I am perfectly happy with your decision to be a vegetarian, as long as you understand that cows provide a fabulous source of protein and I will have them for dinner. Also that restraining a pet for its own benefit is what a responsible pet owner does, and that horses who run will in fact break their legs so bad that they need to be put down. I'm sure PETA would rather the horse had been operated on to great expense, and with a severely bad prognosis, left to suffer the rest of it's natural life. Quite frankly, if I was hurt so badly that I had no chance for a quality of life, I'm with the horse owners on this one. A bullet to the brain is the most humane option.
